How to WIN Euro Millions

Below are a few lotto tips to help you pick euro millions winning combinations, but Gail Howard’s book,
Lottery Master Guide, explains all of her
successful methods of number selection in great detail with examples
of patterns shown throughout.

Lottery numbers are randomly drawn. But randomly drawn numbers form patterns
that can be tracked and used to our advantage. Having carefully analyzed all the
drawings in past lottery results of more than 180 different Lotto games worldwide, with
histories going back as far as 1955, we have verified the following incredibly simple rule:

That which is MOST POSSIBLE happens MOST OFTEN.
That which is LEAST POSSIBLE happens LEAST OFTEN.

The key to Smart Luck’s successful lotto number selection methods is playing
the probabilities. If you play a pattern that occurs only five
percent of the time, you can expect that pattern to lose 95
percent of the time, giving you no chance to win 95 percent of
the time. So, don’t buck the probabilities.

Tickets Purchased Outside the UK

It is only possible to collect a EuroMillions prize in the country where the ticket was purchased. Players who purchased an entry in another country must return there to claim their money. Below are the details for the length of time before prizes expire in each of the other eight participating countries:

Small prizes will be redeemable from any authorised retailer in the country. If you win a larger amount, or even the jackpot, then you will need to contact that country’s official operator for advice.

Tax

Only three of the nine participating countries charge taxes on lottery winnings:

  • Spain — Prizes of €40,000 or more are taxed at 20%
  • Switzerland — A 35% tax is owed on any winnings worth over CHF1 million
  • Portugal — Prize amounts over €5,000 are taxed at 20%

Remember the Basics

It seems obvious, but you cannot win EuroMillions without buying a ticket. Once you have bought your tickets, you know that you have a chance of winning that jackpot. You really do have to be in it to win it.

Similarly, you can’t collect a prize if you do not check your ticket. Make sure you use the EuroMillions Ticket Checker soon after the draw takes place to see whether you have matched any numbers and if you are due a prize.

The advantage of playing EuroMillions online is that you are notified of any prizes you win on your tickets, and you can’t lose or damage them because your numbers are digitally connected to you in your player account.

Playing Online

Playing online has become increasingly popular as it offers a number of advantages over buying a ticket from a retailer. For example, once you purchase your entries online, they are then stored in your account and cannot be lost, stolen or damaged unlike paper tickets. Plus you will be notified if you win, so you don’t even need to check the results.

Direct Debits

Another advantage of entering online is that National Lottery players can enter their lines on a continuous basis to ensure they never miss a draw. To set up a Direct Debit, follow these steps:

  • Step1

    Fill out an online playslip
    Select your numbers, how many lines you wish to play and whether you want to take part in the Tuesday draw, the Friday draw, or both.

  • Step2

    Choose to play ‘continuously by Direct Debit’
    Rather than selecting the option to enter for a set number of weeks.

  • Step3

    Submit your bank sort code and account number

The Direct Debit will take about four weeks to begin and you will then be entered automatically into your chosen draws. You will get a different Millionaire Maker entry for each draw.

You can make changes to your personal details, the numbers you want to use or the draws you wish to enter at any time by going to your account.

Beware of Lottery Scams

Unfortunately, many scammers try to take advantage of people’s dreams of winning the lottery. Here are a few tips to protect yourself and avoid lottery scams:

  • Only buy tickets from authorized lottery retailers.
  • It’s not legal to sell lottery tickets across national borders. You can usually buy tickets if you are located in the country, but offers to sell international lottery tickets by mail or online are usually illegal.
  • If you didn’t buy a lottery ticket or participate in a second-chance lottery game, you didn’t win.
  • The lottery doesn’t notify you when you win; you are responsible for checking your winning tickets.
  • You’re never required to pay money up-front to receive a winning lottery prize.

How to WIN the EuroMillions Lotto Game

PLAY A MIX OF ODD AND EVEN LOTTO NUMBERS

Choose the best Euro Millions Lotto numbers with a fairly even mix of odd and
even numbers. All odd numbers or all even numbers are drawn less than 3% of the time.
The best mix is to have 3/2 or 2/3 which means three odd and two even, or two odd and three even. One of these two patterns will occur in
68 percent of Euro Millions lotto drawings.

PLAY A MIX OF HIGH AND LOW LOTTO NUMBERS

Winning numbers are usually spread across the entire number field.
Cut a number field in half to get the low half and the high half. In a
50-number game like EuroMillions, numbers 1 to 25 would be in the low half, and numbers 26 to 50
would be in the high half. All high numbers or all low numbers are rarely drawn, occurring
only 3 percent of the time. A mix of 3 high/2 low or 2 high/3 low occurs 68% of the time, so this is a good bet.

OMIT ONE LOTTERY NUMBER GROUP

Look at a list of past winning lottery numbers in the Euromillions results, and you’ll see,
that usually one or more of the number groups is not included. For
example, in the combination 5-8-14-17-32, there are no 20’s. Tracking and studying
Number Groups can help you decide which group to omit and which group to give extra
heavy play.

PLAY NUMBERS WITH A RECENTLY RARE GAMES OUT VALUE

List the number of games skipped (games out) since the last hit (win) for each of
the winning numbers during the last five games. Then mark the number of times each
skip occurred. If any skip from 0 to 5 did not occur, play the Lotto numbers that
are out that many games. (Help working with lotto games skipped.)

LOTTO NUMBER SUM ADVICE — PLAY A BALANCED GAME

After you choose five numbers you want to play, add them together and make sure
that the sum of the five numbers adds up to somewhere between 95 and 160. Sums that
fall within that range will account for over 70 percent of all the 5-number sets of
winning EuroMillions Red Balls.

CONSIDER INCLUDING ONE NUMBER FROM THE LAST DRAWING

In EuroMillions results, on average, one lottery number will be a repeat hit from the last drawing every
other drawing or 43 percent of the time.

PLAY HOT NUMBERS THAT HAVE A LOW GAMES OUT VALUE

Numbers that have been out (losers) for six games or less account for about half of
the winning numbers. Losing numbers
that have been out for 12 games or less account for about three-quarters of all the winning numbers. This tells us that hot
numbers are more likely to hit, but don’t forget to include at least one long shot in
your group of 5.

DON’T USUALLY INCLUDE A LONGSHOT NUMBER

It is difficult to know when a cold number will end a long losing streak. If you play a
number every drawing because you think it is due, you could be chasing it
for many months. (Number 45 in New York Lotto sat out 100 drawings before it
finally hit.) Although, when a number has been out for 70 games or so, it might be
worth chasing.

History of the EuroMillions Lottery

The EuroMillions lottery was launched in February 2004 by three participating countries: France, Spain and the UK. Just a few months later (on 8 September 2004, to be precise), six more countries joined the fold: Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal and Switzerland. Since its original establishment, EuroMillions has undergone a few changes. In 2009, a limit to the jackpot tally was introduced (the «cap») and in 2011 the lottery operators launched a second weekly draw on Tuesday nights. The very first EuroMillions draw took place on 13 February 2004. On that momentous night a French lottery player managed to scoop up the first EuroMillions jackpot in history.

In 2006, the EuroMillions operators stipulated that there would be a maximum number of sequential draws in a jackpot life cycle. As a result, from that moment onwards, EuroMillions jackpots could only roll over 10 times (i.e. 11 draws). If there was still no first category winner at draw number 12, then the first category prize money (the jackpot) would be won by the winner(s) in the next winning category.

It didn’t take long, however, before this rule was annulled and a new one was put in its place. In November 2009, the EuroMillions lottery introduced an upper limit to its jackpot prize, the so called jackpot cap. Initially this limit was set at €185 million and it was agreed that every time anyone would win the jackpot at the cap stage, the future limit would be €5 million higher. The first time this happened was in July 2011, when the British couple Chris and Colin Weir won a €185 million EuroMillions jackpot. As a result the EuroMillions jackpot cap was increased by €5 million to €190 million.

EuroMillions introduced a Tuesday draw in May 2011. At that time, changes were also made to the game format. A new winning category was introduced for players who correctly match two main numbers and the guessing range of the Lucky Star numbers was increased from 9 to 11 numbers. To celebrate the changes, EuroMillions organised the first of its legendary Superdraws with a €100 million guaranteed jackpot.

In 2012 the rule was amended once again to state that the maximum jackpot would remain at the €190 million level and could only roll over once (and remain at the cap level). If the €190 million EuroMillions jackpot is not won after two draws, the amount gets divided up over the winner(s) in the next winning prize category.

Starting from 24 September 2016, the Lucky Stars are now chosen from a pool of 12 numbers instead of the previous pool of 11 numbers. The starting guaranteed EuroMillions jackpot has been increased to €17 million. The rule regarding the jackpot cap was amended to state that the maximum jackpot of €190 million would remain for up to four draws and if not won, that amount would be divided up between the winner(s) in the next highest winning prize category.

An interesting side note is the story of the Kosovo refugee who changed his luck around by winning a EuroMillions jackpot. A father of four who had immigrated to Belgium, he won a €168 million prize in October 2016.

EuroMillions raised its jackpot cap starting February 2020, immediately setting a €200 million cap. Under its new format, once the €200 million cap is reached for the first time, the jackpot in the next EuroMillions jackpot cycle can roll over as high as €210 million. Once that new jackpot cap is reached, the EuroMillions will raise its jackpot cap to €220 million. The EuroMillions jackpot will continue to grow in this manner until it reaches its maximum jackpot cap of €250 million.

Up to €2,000 Prizes of up to €600 are paid directly into your online account. Larger prizes are paid directly into your bank account.
Over €2,000 You must visit your lottery account and request the transfer of your prize into your bank account. Prizes over €40,000 are taxed at a rate of 20%.

Up to €2,000 Prizes can be claimed from any Loterias y Apuestas sales outlet.
Over €2,000 Prizes can be claimed from any Loterias y Apuestas sales outlet. Winnings will be paid via bank transfer. Prizes over €40,000 are taxed at a rate of 20%.

EuroMillions players in Spain have three months to claim any prizes.

Ireland

Prize Total Online
Up to €99 Prizes are paid directly into your online account.
Between €100 and €500 Prizes are sent by cheque to your registered home address.
Between €501 and €9,999 Prizes are paid by cheque once a claim form has been completed.
Over €10,000 Prizes must be collected in person from National Lottery headquarters in Dublin. A cheque will be presented once the win has been validated.
Prize Total Authorised Retailer
Up to €100 Smaller prizes can be claimed from any authorised lottery retailer. Some retailers can also pay out prizes of up to €2,500 if funds are available.
Between €100 and €15,000 Visit any lottery claim centre around the country to pick up your prize.
Over €15,000

You must visit the lottery headquarters in Dublin to claim your prize. Alternatively, you can claim lower awards by sending your ticket by post* to lottery headquarters.

If you have won the jackpot, the Match 5+1 Star prize or the top EuroMillions Plus award of €500,000, you should ring the lottery straight away on 01- 836 4444.

EuroMillions players in Ireland have 90 days to claim any prizes.

The Odd-Even Patterns In the EuroMillions

Odd-even patterns do have an impact on your number selection strategy.  You fail to choose the right composition of odd-even numbers, and you fail to win even before you play.

The Euromillions number field can be divided into two sets:

Odd = {1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15,17,19,21,23,25,27,29,31,33,35,37,39,41,43,45,47,49}

Even = {2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20,22,24,26,28,30,32,34,36,38,40,42,44,46,48,50}

The table below shows the complete odd-even patterns in EuroMillions with their corresponding probability:

The table shows that the first two are the best ones to play in EuroMillions.  To help you figure out the best and the worst ones, I further divide the patterns into three groups:

The Low-High Patterns Based On The Actual EuroMillions Results

Here’s another probability study using the low-high pattern.

We derive the low-high patterns using the following sets:

Low = {1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,…,25}

High = {26,27,28,29,30,…,50}

Again, the results of the study show that EuroMillions follows the dictate of probability.

The table and the graph above reinforces the fact that the EuroMillions game is subordinate to the principle of probability.

  • 3-low-2-high is expected to appear 416 times – it occurred 468 times in the real draw.
  • 4-low-1-high is projected to appear 190 times – it appeared in 216 times in the actual draw.
  • 0-low-5-high is supposed to be drawn 32 times – it was drawn 22 times in the real draw.

As a EuroMillions player, you should pay attention to the composition of your combination and make sure that it follows either the 3-low-2-high or 2-low-3-high patterns.  And never play the rest of the low-high patterns.
